Eco-Freight Score / Q&A

❓ Q&A Eco-Freight Score

What is Eco-Freight Score?

The Eco-Freight Score is an indicator that categorizes the environmental impact of freight transportation into five groups (A to E), based on carbon intensity measured in gCO2e / t.km.

Who is using the Eco-Freight Score?

Launched by OVRSEA in 2023, the Eco-Freight Score is used by shippers, forwarders, carriers, and public bodies sharing the goal of reducing freight's carbon impact.

How and why would I use the Eco-Freight Score?

The Eco-Freight Score enables comparison of carbon efficiency across different transport options, regardless of distance, cargo weight, or transport mode. It helps make more sustainable transport decisions.

How to use it? Is it free?

Yes, the Eco-Freight Score is open and free. It consists of three indissociable elements: the visuals, the methodology, and the name. Usage must follow the defined methodology.

What is the methodology behind it?

The score is based on carbon intensity (gCO2e / t.km) calculated door-to-door. See the full methodology for formulas and detailed criteria.

What is the purpose of Eco-Freight Score? What are its objectives?

The ambition is to become the industry-wide reference tool for steering transport choices toward a more sustainable system: stimulating competition based on sustainability, encouraging committed players, and making carbon impact visible.

How can I improve my score?

Favor sea or rail transport over air, optimize load factors, use alternative fuels, and consider modal shift when possible.

How can Eco-Freight Score help decarbonize freight?

By making the carbon impact of each transport visible and comparable, the score enables decision-makers to make informed trade-offs and progressively shift their flows toward greener solutions.
