Climate Change (3/3): The IPCC Who is providing the knowledge on climate change?
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- The IPCC is a panel of scientific experts that evaluates and synthesizes scientific information on climate change and considers adaptation and mitigation strategies.
- The 6th Assessment Report released by the IPCC, released the mon march 20th, 2023, warns that global temperatures will inevitably rise above 1.5°C in the next 10 years and emphasizes that urgent action is needed to prevent catastrophic climate change.
The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change)
The IPCC is an intergovernmental body created by the United Nations in 1988 to assess the science related to climate change.
What the IPCC doesn’t stand for
- The IPCC is not a laboratory nor a structure that produces scientific research
- The IPCC does not provide guidance on what to do, how to do it, or how to prioritize.
What the IPCC is
A panel of experts aiming to synthesize the work already carried out in laboratories around the world. They have 3 missions:
- Evaluate methodically the scientific, technical and socio-economic information available in relation to the issue of climate change
- Identify a consensus of the scientific community and the limits in knowledge or interpretation of results
- Establish the consequences of climate change and consider adaptation and mitigation strategies
Production cycles: Every 5-7 years, three reports are produced by three different working groups.
The 6th assessment report is unequivocal: we need to shift now!
The 6th Assessment Report was released on March 20th, 2023. It alerts that :
- Global temperatures will inevitably exceed +1.5°C in the next 10 years
- Our current trajectory (taking into account the current climate pledge) will lead us to +3.2°C of global warming by the end of the century.
- Whilst there remains hope, this is indeed our last opportunity to change this trajectory.
